British banks backed large parts of the U.S. slavery economy, and British factories were the world’s largest customers for the cotton produced by plantations in southern U.S. states. In 1663, it was granted a monopoly by King Charles II for the British slavery trade. In 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, a machine that would transform the U.S. slavery economy. Mill owners including the Arkwrights, one of the richest families in the industry, were Smith family clients. Two British travel writers visited Farm Pen in 1837, when the land was still in Smith family hands.

The S&P 500 on Thursday climbed 1.9% to log its best one-day gain since April. The S&P 500 has gained an average 6.7% from November to April since 1990, according to CFRA data. “We remain comfortable with our long-standing 3,900 year-end target for the S&P 500,” he wrote in a note on October 29. The S&P 500 closed Thursday at about 4,318. “The acquisition of Comcast’s stake in Hulu at fair market value will further Disney’s streaming objectives,” the company said in a short statement.

Israel declared war on Hamas Sunday after the Palestinian militant group launched a brutal attack that killed at least 1,300 people. But investors have since bought up shares of virtually risk-free government bonds, indicating that Wall Street remains worried. Utilities, energy and real estate stocks have also outperformed the broader S&P 500 index’s roughly 1% gain this week. SYDNEY, April 24 (Reuters) - Marika Koroibete won the 2022 John Eales Medal as Australia's player of the year on Monday despite missing the end of year tour to Europe because of his club commitments in Japan. The powerful Fiji-born winger came out top in a ballot of Wallabies players ahead of loose forward Rob Valetini after some outstanding performances during the July series against England and the Rugby Championship. Koroibete, who also took the award in 2019, joined George Smith, Nathan Sharpe, Michael Hooper, Israel Folau and David Pocock as multiple winners of the accolade.
